Performance marketing vs normal marketing, a simple guide by Aakash Puri, performance marketing strategist in Dehradun

Performance Marketing vs Normal Marketing: What Is the Difference? (Simple Guide for Business Owners)

Quick answer: Normal marketing is when you pay to be seen and hope people come. Performance marketing is when you pay for results you can count, like a lead, a call or a sale, and you track every rupee. If you are a business owner with a small or medium budget, performance marketing is usually the safer place to start, because you always know what is working.

Many business owners in Dehradun ask me the same thing: “Aakash, I already did marketing. I printed pamphlets, I boosted posts, I even put up a hoarding. Why should I try something new?”

It is a fair question. So in this article I will explain, in simple words, what performance marketing is, how it is different from normal marketing, and how you can decide which one your business needs. I will also share real numbers from ad accounts I have managed since 2018, so you can see how it works in real life and not just in theory.

What is normal marketing?

Normal marketing, also called traditional marketing or brand marketing, is about getting your name in front of as many people as possible. You pay first and you hope it brings customers later.

Some common examples:

  • A hoarding on Rajpur Road
  • An ad in the newspaper or on local radio
  • Pamphlets inside the morning paper
  • Boosting a post on Instagram just to get likes
  • Sponsoring a college fest or a local event

None of these are bad. People do see your name. The problem is that it is very hard to answer one simple question: how many customers did this actually bring me? If you spend ₹50,000 on a hoarding, you cannot really tell if it brought 2 customers or 200.

What is performance marketing?

Performance marketing is marketing where you measure results, not just reach. You run ads on platforms like Google Ads and Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram), and you track exactly what happens after someone sees the ad.

Instead of asking “how many people saw my ad?”, you ask:

  • How many people filled the form or sent a WhatsApp message?
  • How much did one lead cost me?
  • How many of those leads became paying customers?
  • For every ₹1 I spent, how much money came back?

That last number has a name: ROAS, or return on ad spend. If you spend ₹10,000 and make ₹50,000 in sales, your ROAS is 5X. Simple.

A simple example to understand the difference

Let us say you run a sweet shop in Dehradun and Diwali is coming.

With normal marketing, you print 5,000 pamphlets and put them in newspapers. People see them. Some come to your shop. But you do not know who came because of the pamphlet and who would have come anyway.

With performance marketing, you run an Instagram ad to people within 5 km of your shop, with a “Book your Diwali gift box on WhatsApp” button. Now you can see that the ad got 140 WhatsApp messages, 60 orders, and ₹1.2 lakh in sales from ₹15,000 of ad spend. Next week, you put more money into the ad that worked best and stop the one that did not.

That is the whole idea. You stop guessing and start seeing.

Real results: what performance marketing looks like in real accounts

Here are three real examples from accounts I have managed. These numbers come straight from the clients’ Google Ads and Meta Ads accounts.

1. A yoga school getting students from Germany

An Indian yoga school wanted students from Germany for its teacher training course. We ran Meta Ads with real photos of the school and called every lead within 2 hours. They spent ₹52,149 on ads and got ₹3.24 lakh in enrolments. That is a 6.2X return. With a newspaper ad, they would never have known which rupee brought which student.

2. A manufacturer in Canada and the US

International Mascot Corporation was paying $223 for every lead on Google Ads. After we cleaned up the account, removed wasted keywords and fixed the tracking, the cost came down to $16 per lead. That is 92.7% lower. This kind of saving is only possible when you can see the numbers clearly.

3. A dental clinic in Canada

St. Albert Dental Centre has run Google Ads with me for more than 7 years. In that time the ads have brought 2,686 patient conversions, like calls and bookings. When people search “dentist near me” and your clinic shows up at the right moment, you do not need to convince them much.

Is normal marketing useless then?

No. Normal marketing still has a place. If you are a big brand, if you are opening a new showroom, or if you want people to remember your name for years, awareness matters.

But for most small and medium businesses, money is limited. You cannot afford to spend ₹1 lakh and “hope”. That is why I always tell business owners: first build a system that brings you customers you can count. Then spend on awareness with the profit.

The best results usually come when both work together. People see your brand on Instagram, they search your name on Google later, and your Google ad or website is right there to catch them.

Which one does your business need?

Ask yourself these four questions:

  1. Do I need new customers every month? If yes, start with performance marketing.
  2. Is my budget limited? If yes, performance marketing lets you start small, even ₹500 to ₹1,000 a day, and grow only when it works.
  3. Do I know what one customer is worth to me? If you know this, you can decide how much you can pay for a lead.
  4. Can my team reply to leads quickly? Ads bring the lead. Your team has to close it. A lead called within 5 minutes is far more likely to buy than one called the next day.

How to start performance marketing the right way

This is the same order I follow on every account:

  1. Fix the tracking first. Set up Google Analytics, the Meta Pixel and conversion tracking. If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.
  2. Pick the right platform. Google Ads works best when people are already searching for what you sell. Meta Ads works best when you need to create demand with good visuals and offers.
  3. Make one clear offer. “Free consultation”, “Book a demo class” or “Get a quote on WhatsApp” works better than “Visit our page”.
  4. Send people to a simple page. One page, one goal, one button. Not your full website.
  5. Start small and test. Try 2 or 3 ads, see which one brings cheaper leads, and stop the rest.
  6. Follow up fast. Reply on WhatsApp or call within minutes.
  7. Scale what works. Increase the budget slowly on the ads that are profitable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Boosting posts and calling it ads. The boost button is built for likes, not for customers. Use Ads Manager with the right goal.
  • Looking only at likes and reach. Likes do not pay rent. Look at cost per lead and sales.
  • Changing everything every two days. Ads need a few days of data before you judge them.
  • No tracking. Running ads without tracking is like driving with your eyes closed.
  • Slow replies. Most leads are lost because nobody called them back on time.

Frequently asked questions

What is performance marketing in simple words?

It is marketing where you pay for ads and measure results like leads, calls and sales, so you know exactly what you got for your money.

How much budget do I need to start?

Many local businesses start testing with ₹500 to ₹1,000 a day. The right budget depends on your city, your industry and what one customer is worth to you.

How fast will I see results?

Usually the first leads come in 7 to 14 days. Stable, profitable results normally take 60 to 90 days of testing and improving.

Is Google Ads or Meta Ads better?

Neither is better for everyone. Google Ads catches people who are already searching. Meta Ads reaches people who are not searching yet but may want your product. Many businesses use both.

Can I run performance marketing myself?

Yes, you can start yourself if you learn the basics of tracking, targeting and offers. Many business owners start on their own and bring in an expert once they want to scale faster.
